गुवाहाटी में मां कामाख्या मंदिर के बाद सबसे दर्शनीय स्थान उमानंद मंदिर है। इस मंदिर में जाने के एक ओर नौका विहार का आनंद मिलता है तो दूसरी ओर विश्व के सबसे छोटे नदीद्वीप को देखने का अवसर मिलता है और साथ ही स्वयंभू शिवलिंग के दर्शन का सौभाग्य प्राप्त होता है।

गुवाहाटी के फैंसी बाजार और हाईकोर्ट के पास से ब्रह्मपुत्र नदी के घाट हैं जहां से उमानंद मंदिर के लिए फेरी-स्टीमर चलते हैं जो प्रति व्यक्ति 100/-रुपये आने जाने के लेते हैं। स्टीमर से 12-15 मिनट की यात्रा के बाद उमानंद द्वीप के घाट पर पहुंच जाते हैं जहां से करीब 130 सीढियां चढ़कर मंदिर में पहुंचा जा सकता है।

गुवाहाटी शहर के बीच से होकर बहने वाली ब्रह्मपुत्र नदी के बीच बना उमानंद द्वीप दुनिया के सबसे छोटे नदी द्वीपों में गिना जाता है।यह द्वीप एक छोटी सी पहाड़ी है जिसे भस्माचल पर्वत भी कहते हैं। स्थानीय मान्यता है कि इस जगह तपस्यारत शिव ने कामदेव को समाधि भंग करने पर अपने तीसरे नेत्र से भस्म कर दिया था। यह द्वीप मोर के आकार का होने के कारण ब्रिटिश उपनिवेश के समय पीकाक आईलैंड के नाम से जाना जाता था। मंदिर में मुख्य मंदिर विष्णु और शिव के हैं। प्रवेशद्वार पार करते ही एक बडे हाल कमरे में विष्णु और सूर्य की छोटी प्रतिमाएं स्थापित हैं। हाल कमरे के पीछे स्थित मंदिर में कुछ सीढियां उतर कर स्वयंभू शिवलिंग है जिसे उमानंद शिव कहते हैं।

मंदिर परिसर के बाहर एक गणेश मंदिर और आसपास तीन - चार छोटे छोटे शिवालय ओर बने हैं।

मंदिर से चारों ओर देखने पर ब्रह्मपुत्र की अविरल धारा का मोहक दृश्य सम्मोहित करता है। इस द्वीप पर घूमने के लिए एक फुटपाथ बना है जिससे द्वीप पर पाई जाने वाले सुपारी, नारियल, बांस, बेत, बेर व अन्य वनसंपदा के बीच चलते हुए सुखद अहसास होता है।

समय की सुविधानुसार घाट से मिलने वाली फेरी व स्पीड बोट से नदी में यात्रा का मजा लिया जा सकता है। गुवाहाटी रेलवे स्टेशन, पलटन बाजार, बेलटोला, दिसपुर, खानापारा सहित अन्य जगहों से ब्रह्मपुत्र फेरी घाट के लिए आटो व स्थानीय परिवहन सुविधा उपलब्ध है।

Umananda Temple is the most visible place after Maa Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati. By visiting this temple, one gets the pleasure of boating and on the other one gets the opportunity to see the world's smallest river island and also gets the privilege of seeing the self-styled Shivling. There are ghats of Brahmaputra river near the fancy market and high court of Guwahati from where ferry-steamers run to Umanand temple which charges Rs.100/- per person for travel. After a journey of 12-15 minutes by steamer, Umanand reaches the ghat of the island, from where the temple can be reached by climbing about 130 steps. Umanand Island, built in the middle of the Brahmaputra river flowing through the city of Guwahati, is counted among the smallest river islands in the world. This island is a small hill which is also known as Bhasmachal Parvat. Local belief is that Lord Shiva, who was doing penance at this place, had consumed Kamadeva with his third eye after breaking his samadhi. The island was known as Peacock Island at the time of British colonization due to the size of a peacock. The main shrines in the temple are those of Vishnu and Shiva. As soon as you cross the entrance, small statues of Vishnu and Surya are installed in a large hall room. There is a self-styled Shivling, which is called Umanand Shiva, after descending some steps in the temple located behind the hall room. There is a Ganesh temple outside the temple complex and three or four small pagodas around it. Looking around from the temple, one mesmerizes the mesmerizing view of the continuous stream of Brahmaputra. A footpath has been made to roam on this island, which gives a pleasant feeling while walking among the betel nut, coconut, bamboo, cane, plum and other forest wealth found on the island. According to the convenience of the time, traveling in the river can be enjoyed by the ferry and speed boat available from the ghat. Auto and local transport facility is available for Brahmaputra Ferry Ghat from Guwahati Railway Station, Paltan Bazar, Beltola, Dispur, Khanapara and other places.
